Breakbeat, Breaks Music
So what exactly is breakbeat or breaks music?
We are very partial to breakbeat music at RockinSound. The style is basically a derivative of old school rave music and acid lines of early electronic music played at parties and clubs.
A classic “break” was the part of the record where there was traditionally an energetic percussion based breakdown or sequence. Modern breakbeat features cut beats that are not the traditional 4 to 4 pattern, but rather somewhat broken and interwoven. There are also connections to the old school “B-Boy” breakdancing music, such as that featured in the movie Electric Boogaloo released in 1984. Breaks and Breakbeat Music are alot of variations of alot of things.
The music is presented in anything from a dark, theatrical style, to a more contemporary pop or hip hop sound. Breaks music has also been found exceptionally delicious to mix with Reggae and island styles of music, as well as female vocals.
You will hear the most experimental techniques exploring breakbeat, from echoes to applied methods in the attempt to push the envelope of sound with synthesizers reminding you of pirates or monkeys, or perhaps your favorite snack, there really aren’t alot of rules.
There are groups of people in modern society, commonly known as “woosies” or “wannabes” who have attempted to down the genre. They have been known to make statements such as “how can you listen to that noise…” or “can you turn that down…” In our research efforts, we have found that these people typically end up failing in life and disappointing others around them. They are often defending some false sense of security and are also deeply controlled by credit.
Breakbeaters, as they are commonly referred to, are also interestingly comfortable with being labeled with the term “slackers.” They maintain a tight brotherhood amongst themselves, while sharing their talent and musical information with others, thusly, bringing others into their nice group. It is very old school and very cool. Many started as complete fools or idiots, only to have people within this brotherhood be nice to them, further encouraging their interest in being included and contributing.
There are not many fights in the breakbeat culture. An occasional riff usually is resolved quickly. Many try to make time for the art, only wishing they had more, while many others make it a lifelong dedication to make time, whether being rewarded financially or not, knowing that the music in itself and the friendships made are truly priceless. Breakbeaters are also known to really like social networking and computer based communication systems, as well as very attractive females.
